Choosing to do so is totally up to you!

Porn Star Q&A:

1) What’s it like to be a Porn Star?
Being a Porn Star offers notoriety, fun, money, rubbing elbows with celebs, freedom with your work schedule, travel, and exciting sexual experiences. But it's not for everyone. You're the only one who can decide if it's right for you or not. And that's one thing we're trying to help you do with this site.

2) What kind of resume, experience, or personal attributes do you need?
Girls-
can get into porn no matter what... almost. If an attractive girl with a nice body (say a 6 or higher on a 1-10 scale) come into town for 10 to 15 days, she can make around 2 adult videos each day for the entire if she wants to. Then she goes home and counts her money. She won't be rich, but it'll probably be more money than she could make in 6 months otherwise. Now unless you’re totally drop dead gorgeous you will also have to understand that most people will work around your restrictions, that is only if your restrictions are reasonable. If you really don't like anal sex, that's Okay..., you don't have to do it in your first shoot, not into ATM (ass to mouth) that's fine as well. But remember that porn is just a JOB and as such you may be paired up with an older man or woman for some of your scenes. So if your not into doing someone that's twice as old as you porn is not the right job for you. This also applies to the type(s) of scenes that you’re available to do; if you’re not willing to do standard hardcore Boy/Girl scenes you can kiss practically 80% of your job offers goodbye. This has to do with the simple rule of supply and demand. If there are 200 girls who are just as pretty as you and there all willing to do anything why are they going to waste there time on you? Another thing to understand is that porn is NOT a dating service. Don't expect to "fall in love" with your co-star. You’re expected to use the same kind of business etiquette that would be used in the "square" or normal world of employment.

Guys- on the other hand, have to live in a town where they actually shoot porn. If you don't already live there, then you need to move there. Beyond that, guys fall into two categories: Those who have a chance on their own, and those who don't. But remember, there are ALWAYS exceptions!

In order for a guy to have a chance on his own he'll usually be a very attractive guy, have a good attitude, have a decent package, a good appearance, be fairly intelligent, and be able to impress a potential employer regardless of what job he was applying for. This answer is more directed toward GAY and/or BI porn actors.

If you're aspiring to become an actor in STRAIGHT porn movies then you need either 1) a girl who can get you into the biz. she'll bring you along with her and just tell the producers that she wants to work with you for the first few scenes that she's in, or 2) an uncle or somebody who you know in the business who gives you a chance, or 3) your own money so you can start your own company to make movies... with you as the male star! What were trying to tell you here is just because you have a big package doesn't mean you're instantly in. Believe it or not there are more then just a few guys out there that fantasize about doing this for a living so you need to be prepared to bring something more to the table then your penis.

3) What states do the shoots take place? Will the companies pay for my travel?
Most companies either operate out of California (Los Angeles) or Florida (Miami). While there are other companies shooting within the USA the vast majority of adult content shoots go on in those states. As far as travel goes unless you're working with a really big company or already a well established adult star yourself most companies will NOT pay for your travel expenses. The ultimate reason behind why most companies won't take a chance on any new or unproven talent is due to in part that too many porn star wannabes that have "flaked" on their travel plans with them in the past. Some companies that actually do pay for travel expenses will also either take those expenses directly out of the models net pay at the end of their shoots or will want talent to shoot complementary scenes before the model will start shooting their paid scenes so the company can get reimbursed for the monetary investment that they have made.

The other thing that you also may wish to consider is when any company books you directly and pays for your travel expenses to do a shoot with them is that they will want to shoot you exclusively for their productions while you are in town. This leaves you less opportunity to do more shoots and earn more money while your there.

4) What are the risks?
HIV is the most feared, but getting involved with the wrong people, being taken advantage of, having your family or friends disown you, having drugs or alcohol ruin your life, or having moral issues with what you're doing are the most frequently reported negative experiences.

5) How are Porn Stars treated by the companies they work for?
If you're good to them, they're usually good to you. If you have your shit together, do your job, and are generally pleasant at work, then you'll have a positive experience. If you bring your problems to a set, wear your emotions on your sleeve, and are a liability to the director instead of an asset, then you'll probably not be treated with respect.

There's a stereotype that most porn stars are irresponsible, snotty, stuck up, or unreliable. Though there are a lot of great people in porn, there's also a reason for the stereotype. Directors usually aren't surprised if an actress/actor doesn't show up for a scene, has been drinking or is on drugs, or if somebody has an emotional outburst that causes a disturbance. The reason they're not surprised?... NOT because everybody in porn is a loser, but because directors have just about seen it all. Now with that in mind production companies have set up a website for them to keep the other producers and directors informed of positive and negative behavior of adult performers (Porn Star Performance). We would recommend that if you want to have a successful career in the "Jizz Bizz" that you try and keep your stage name off of it.

6) Are there any guarantees?
These days there aren't guarantees with any job you have... so the answer is absolutely NOT!

7) Are there misconceptions about being a porn star?
The first one is no one gets paid thousands of dollars...well, there are some big names in the business that make that much, but if you're thinking $5,000 to drop yer trousers, it just ain't happening. The second is if you’re worried about "getting caught" by someone you know? Well, with more then 50,000+ adult sites out on the net, chances of this happening are slim to none. Now we certainly can't guarantee that someone won't recognize you, but understand this: we've been doing this for well over 10 years now... we've evaluated thousands of adult sites and not once have we been able to ID anyone we've known from school, the community, or the workplace. The very few times that we've heard of this sort of thing happening to one of the actors, it's been them... bragging to someone about a shoot that they've done

8) How much money do Porn Stars make?
It depends. And there are naturally exceptions, but generally girls make more than guys, and the range is wide. Girls make between 500 - 2000 per sex scene, with amounts depending on who the girl is, and what the scene actually involves. The majority of companies pay by check however there are some companies that still do pay in cash. It's always best to check this information specifically with the company prior to your shoot. All payments are paid to performers AFTER the scene has been completed.....sorry this is not escorting people. so nobody in porn gets paid for their work upfront.

Guys - In general, make about half as much as girls, but their rate is usually the same regardless of what type of sex they're doing. The range for guys is from 0-$500 per scene. Usually a new guy starts with small companies and small projects making $50 to $250 per scene. If the companies and girls you work with like you and your performances, word will travel fast, and you'll be working for the larger companies, higher budget projects, and with veteran female performers before you know it. And as you climb porn's "professional ladder", your "per scene" rate will increase if you expect it to. But you may have to ask for it with some companies. It basically follows the law of supply and demand.

Guys usually get paid their per-scene rate for any scene that they do, and the same or slightly less for magazine shoots.

Girls - The range for girls is usually from a few hundred to $2,000 per scene. A girl's starting point is determined by how marketable she is. She is what sells the product, so if she's a Playboy Playmate or Penthouse Pet, companies will pay a lot for her. Most girls start off making around $400-700 for a boy/girl scene, and after she starts showing up in some of the magazines, she can raise her rate and expect to get it. And the process continues from there. There are typically only 2 types of performers, independent and contract. There are only a chosen few models that actually land that elusive contract. So for all the rest there are a lot of independent performers who make $150,000+ per year just from shooting movies alone.

Generally the factors going into determining how much you will be making are these-

  • You’re Age (18-27 is optimal but MILF's/Cougars make good money too)
  • You’re Appearance (your looks in general)
  • You’re Restrictions (the more your willing to do the more $$$ they will be willing to pay you)
  • You’re Location (most companies are located or shoot regularly in Los Angeles, CA or Miami, FL.)
  • You’re Attitude (are you really comfortable performing sex scenes in front of the camera? everyone will know if your not)
  • You’re Marketability (your general experience level. you won't get paid like Jenna until you have experience like Jenna but there are also cases of models being "shot out" or overexposed)
  • Who you will be shooting for and where they are located (are you shooting for Vivid or Wicked in LA or just the photographer guy down the street from your place in Cuyahoga County, OH)

Girls usually get paid around $500-$900 for a magazine shoot, with exceptions for the biggest stars. For more information about adult models pay rates visit- Porn Star Rates

9) What are the different ways that Porn Stars make money?
Performing hard core and/or simulated sex acts, and other nude modeling for videos, magazines, adult product catalogues, and the internet... and personal appearances, performances, or autograph signings at conventions, adult video and book stores, feature dancing and escorting.

Guys do magazine shoots, as in "Boy/Girl" layouts, some of which are hard core and some simulated sex... a guy can do one of these photo shoots each week if he's a good performer. If it's simulated sex, and kept strictly professional, you'll end up stroking it yourself with little or no help from the girl during the shoot. That's when a guy decides whether he wants to be in mags or just stick with hard core video work.

Guys will sometimes be asked to do nude modeling for adult catalogue companies and sex toy catalogues, and then there's convention signings... but only the top guys end up being paid by companies to represent them at the conventions. Guys are starting to get work doing appearances at adult video/book stores. And the internet has provided a new "stage" on which to perform. Some companies hire guys and girls to perform together, and then there's the do-it-yourself websites, too!

10) How often do Porn Stars work?
Just about as often as they like. If you make it... that is, if you impress the right people at the beginning, then you'll get hired enough that you'll stay as busy as you like. If you want to put a number on it, the average performer will do between 2-6 projects each week, depending... while some choose more and some choose less.

11) How much control do Porn Stars have over the work they do or the projects they do?
Not a whole lot unless they produce the work themselves, meaning hiring a photographer or video crew, and do a shoot as their own project. The down side to working as a performer is that your image isn't your own, and the images can be sold from here to eternity, while you make the basic fee for "performing"... and that's it... usually.

12) What are the companies like? Who runs them?
Some are large and some are small, some are professional and some aren't. As a new performer, you'll find that some companies don't want to even talk to you. Others will tell you to call them after you've got some experience "under your belt". Your agent and other performers will fill you in on which companies are the most reputable, professional, etc... And which ones to avoid like the plague.

13) What is a "go see"?
Most companies will either meet you at a "cattle call" or a "go see". Typically they are like the standard "square" casting calls but naturally since you're doing adult work they involve nudity. This is to show what you are like in front of the casting staff and usually also the director. It only involves standard informational paperwork and a few nude shots of yourself. This is their point of reference for when they are looking for new talent to shoot. These are "unpaid interviews" that eventually lead to paid shoots.

14) What are the people like?
You'll find plenty in porn that you like and dislike, including attitudes and egos. In general, when you first get into porn, there will be some who accept you immediately, and some who'll be standoff-ish... and some will be downright rude. But there's really a place for just about everybody in porn... and after people have heard about you through the "grapevine", others will start asking about you... they'll be curious about the new guy (or girl), and everything after that is pretty cordial.

15) What's it like being on a porn set & performing in a sex scene?
The director is the man... he sometimes has a producer who puts together a cast of guys and girls for the sex scenes, and any other non-sex roles that are called for... and sometimes he does it himself. The director also has a production assistant on the set on the day of the shoot who takes care of all the little stuff... like food and beverages, towels, lube, dealing with "talent" who are late or can't find the location, and collecting legal paperwork from the performers like model releases, STD/HIV tests, and tax documents. And then there's the camera, sound, and lighting guys... the production crew.

Five or six sex scenes go into a porn video, with dialogue mixed in. The sex scenes are what sells, so that's the priority. A movie usually takes from one to three days to shoot. Usually when you show up to a set, you wait. That's because something or another always makes porn shoots go off schedule. So you learn to call a couple hours before your call-time to see how the day's going.

When you do your sex scene, you'll do the scene usually start to finish, with dialogue coming first to set up the sex. There's a lot of care taken to get lighting and sound just right at the beginning of the scene. And sometimes things need adjusting after dialogue and before the sex starts. But after the sex starts, there's usually not much interruption... not much, that is.

During the sex portion of the scene, still camera men will pop in and out and get still photos for box covers and other promo stuff. They coordinate with the video crew so it flows pretty smoothly. The video crew will get different angles and different views for hard and soft core versions, and while they adjust for a minute, the still cameras get their shots. They snap off a few shots or so during each sexual position (usually 3 or 4 positions per scene) and get out of the way so the video crew can resume without delay.

Some of the positions are comfortable, and lots of them aren't, and your job as a guy is to keep wood, and make it look good no matter what. Sometimes a position just won't work, and then you adjust so it's good for you and the cameras. It's what's on video that counts, and if you're having too good of a time, it's usually not going to look right for the camera. So you enjoy performing, you enjoy the sex to some extent, but not fully... at least not the whole time during the scene.

Many performers joke that getting to fuck on a bed is a rarity, and such a nice change of pace! Usually it's on a kitchen counter, bathroom tile floor, or tub, Jacuzzi, pool, or outside on rocks, in a tree, on a motorcycle, on a horse, or something equally "erotic".

After you've done your "fake internal pop", or "FIP" (faking an orgasm while penetrating the woman) for the video's cable version, and then doing the real pop shot on her ass, tits, pussy, mouth, or whatever, you collect your things, take a shower, get paid, say "see you later" to all, and hit the road.

16) What is expected of a Porn Star?
For a girl... hot performances, and that's almost the extent of it. However you must never forget that you're being paid to be cooperative. The producer and director have hired you to do a project that they envision. Most of them have spent hours developing a project that you could ruin in minutes by being uncooperative. Although most film-makers will listen to constructive criticism, or ask for some creative input, be very tactful since they are paying you to be in their project and not the opposite. Also be courteous, friendly and respectful of your co-workers as well. Prima Donna attitudes are not tolerated easily. It can lead to less work simply because nobody wants to be "stuck on a set with a bitch". Punctuality is also a key element in determining how long you will last in the Jizz Bizz. Since you are not the only person scheduled to be there. At most shoots you will have your co-stars, camera crew, makeup crew and the director. If they all can make it in to the set on schedule, so can you. If you blow off a shoot, or arrive very late, you will develop a deserved reputation for being unreliable. That will lead to less work, because time is money and the producer will still have to pay everybody for waiting for you. Don't depend on anyone but yourself to get you to the set on time. "My ride was late" is not considered an acceptable excuse. Also, don't go out partying the night before a shoot. You want to look fresh and have your energy level up. Sleeping through an alarm clock is also considered unacceptable behavior.

Since women are naturally the "hot community" in the heterosexual world of the blue biz. This is why you will always see fresh new female faces so much in comparison to the same regular guys. What you also want to always remember is that it's just like any real "square" job. Most companies have usually chosen the male talent for the scene that you have been cast for well in advance. So this is NOT the time to try to be a "Diva" and let everyone know that you only work with "your" male talent. This move is the quickest way to commit "porn suicide". Now the flip side to this is that after awhile of being in the business and meeting other performers it is well within reason of having a "short list" of people (male & female performers) that you prefer to work with. This however again is not a guarantee that you will be paired up with anyone in a certain way. It only helps the casting people in making a decision on who will perform a better scene together.

For guys... you're expected to get wood and deliver a cum shot when and where it's needed, regardless of the chemistry that you and the girl have. Sometimes that means stroking it yourself during any camera switches, film reloads, etc. If she doesn't want to be fucking when the camera's not rolling or snapping shots, then you have to be "professional" enough to get the job done without bitching about it.

For the most part, the guy is there to supply a cock so that the girl can be filmed getting fucked, and looking hot while she's getting fucked. Anything else that may be pleasurable can be considered a bonus.

By the same token, if a guy wants to relax and stroke it himself during any time when the camera's not rolling, the girl has to understand... even if she's dying to keep getting fucked. In practice, that doesn't happen very often, but the equality does exist.

17) Anything else that should be expected of a Porn Star?
Yes, Yes, Yes......The vast majority of companies are PROFESSIONAL and wish that you treat your time on their set as professional as well. Therefore in most cases your significant other will not be allowed on the set, unless you’re performing the scene with he/she. You may want to think of it this way. If you were working any other ordinary (square) job...like let’s just say fast food or retail sales...would your boyfriend/girlfriend accompany to work and stay with you the whole entire time? Our guess unless you’re living in fantasyland is NO....absolutely NOT! Now if you have a driver they may wait either in the car or somewhere (anywhere) OFF set. Another point to bring up too is that animals are not allowed on sets as well (the only exception to this rule naturally is if your visually impaired and you need a guide dog). Now it may be cute for Pairs Hilton to bring her Chihuahua in a bag wherever she goes but ladies you are not PAIRS HILTON. You are there being paid to do a job and not there to play with your pets.

18) Is being a Porn Star like being a mainstream Hollywood actor?
NO! But that's not hard to figure out. There's more money and respect given to mainstream actors. Even a porn "superstar" remains largely unknown to the amateur nudist masses, but as a porn star you get recognized by people here and there who think what you do is really cool and want to meet you, or to ask you about porn, or how to become a porn actor/actress themselves. And there are times when porn stars get special treatment because of who they are... especially the girls.

And then there are the times when someone will approach you and ask, "Don't I know you from somewhere"? That one's always kind of funny. That's when you know there's a good chance that they do their grocery shopping at the same store as you, or they're a fan of porn... or maybe you just have a "familiar" face!

19) Does penis size matter?
As long as you have enough to make it look good on camera... which is 5 or more inches, you'll be just fine. The camera has to be able to see penetration, and when you're talking stills, they've got to be able to see enough cock to see that it's hard, and they've got to see the penetration. Girls don't like getting rammed all day with a huge cock, so you can be too big in a practical sense. Optimum seems to be 7 to 9 inches... the directors get a little extra to work with as far as the camera goes, and the girls get all they want without worrying too much.
